A wonderful turn of the Century, Art Nouveau Silver Brooch.
This magnificent Brooch is set with a wonderful aquamarine glass stone and finished with Marcasite stones.
The Brooch is marked with a 925 silver mark (see photo) and has been tested for 92,5% solid silver.
Marcasite jewellery was fashionable and popular in Victorian and later times.
It was often used to imitate diamonds.
It is usually described as being a pale bronze colour and the designs resemble an "Art Deco" period, giving the jewellery a vintage estate look.
Originally the name marcasite was applied by mineralogists to an unstable form of iron sulphide crystallizing in the rhombic system.
The marcasite found in jewellery is also iron sulphide, with the same chemical composition, but crystallizing in the cubic system.
Both forms are also called pyrites or iron pyrites.
The Brooch is in excellent condition and still wearable.
A magnificent jewel bringing back the glory of this wonderful period of jewellery making.
A wonderful item to collect, to wear at special occasions or to give as a very special present.
