This wonderful Bi disk is made out of multi colared Jade.
This magnificent ancient artefact is dating back to the Liangzhu culture.
The Liangzhu culture (3400-2250 BC) was the last Neolithic jade culture in the Yangtze River Delta of China.
Its area of influence extended from Lake Tai in the north to Nanjing and Shanghai in the east and Hangzhou in the south.
The culture was highly stratified, as jade, silk, ivory and lacquer artefacts were found exclusively in elite burials, while pottery was more commonly found.
This piece reveals several qualities of jade history and culture, notably in its color and in its purposetion of heaven, the circle enclosing a perfect hole, conveniently placed for the soul to pass through (and for any evil spirits to escape!).
This expression of Chinese spirituality — and superstition — can be seen today in modern cities all over China.
For example, in the epidemic of skyscrapers in Shanghai, most buildings are built around an opening, through which any evil may pass freely without besmirching the inhabitants.
